Training Tip: Slow Down to Speed Up

Life is going too fast...

Have you ever experienced waking up late on a work day, jumping out of bed and trying to make up the time?  Everything seems to get in your way and slows you down.  You make careless mistakes such as:

  • Forgetting your cell phone
  • Spilling coffee on your clothes
  • Going the wrong way to your destination

The more you press yourself, the further behind you fall.  It is as if the universe is conspiring to sabotage your day when, in reality, it is your brain that is causing you the trouble.  It is out of control.

Author Richard Carlson, in his book Slowing Down to the Speed of Life, writes, "When people are feeling rushed and frantic, they make more mistakes, deal with others poorly, burn out, and lose their ability to think clearly, creatively and intelligently."  Carlson also says, "Ironically, you need to slow down in order to deal with increased demands."  Speed with Purpose gives you the method to capture all the demands and allows you to focus your mind (slow it down) to aid you in your effort to accomplish more.

The next time you find yourself in a frantic state, stop and take a planning break.  Outline the very next steps you must take over the next few moments.  Then, step by step, with a calm pace and   focused mind, proceed toward your goal.  Now, more than ever, you need to keep your mind cool, calm and collected so you can operate at peak efficiency.

Key Principle: You need to slow your brain down so you can speed up your performance.
